Why I Love Photographing Proms
It’s all about the hair, nails and the girls in their beautiful dresses and the boys looking sharp in their suits…and then there’s the cars!!
Wayyy back when I left school ‘the prom’ was still very much a thing the American kids did when they finished school. But here in the UK its more of a recent tradition and OMG do I wish it was a thing in my days….but it wasn’t so I guess I have the next best thing which is watching todays kids enjoying their end of school experiences. Prom season is short and sweet but the end of June to beginning of July venues across the land are buzzing full of teens enjoying their last gathering as their entire school year. It’s a time to celebrate all of their hard work, time and achievements at school. It’s a chance to have fun with their friends and create some amazing memories. So, why wouldn’t you want to capture these fun times and be able to look back on in years to come?
I absolutely adore photographing proms and pre prom parties and if I’m being totally honest, I’m probably in the minority that enjoys being in the company of teens and for some reason I can always relate to them!! I think this come through in my photography as I love to capture proms in the same way I approach weddings which is a more relaxed documentary vibe. I’m not one for making people stand there and pose…I just photograph what I see and what I feel as it happens. The natural reactions, the smiles, the laughter, the fun and the silliness. It all makes for epic photos. It really doesn’t take very long before people forget that I’m there to take pictures and just blend into the background. That’s when the magic happens and I get some awesome photographs.
As adults, we know only too well that sadly a lot of these friendships drift apart as their lives take them onto different pathways, so what better way than to keep those memories is to look back at photographs in years to come for everyone involved. Its only then will you truly appreciate the benefit of hiring a photographer to cover your event.
It’s not very often that we get to dress up in extravagant formal wear or arrive to an event in a fancy sports car or with a group of friends in an unusual vehicle. A picture says a thousand words…or so they say!! Its great to save these pictures onto your smart devices or USB, but so often they end up being hidden away never to see the light of day again…or worse still, your device stops working, gets upgraded and you lose the images. I also think it’s great to share these times on social media, but those moments go as quickly as they came. This is even more of a reason to print out these memories and put them into a frame or better still, turn these little capsules of time into a little memory book. Personally, I always think photographs look better printed up and put out on display rather than being shoved away in a drawer somewhere.
